5 Spiritual Practices to connect with Shirdi Sai Baba

Shirdi Sai Baba is truly a divine, worldwide phenomenon today. Though, he lived a simple life, residing in a dilapidated temple on the outskirts of a tiny village in India, begging alms, seated by his dhuni (sacred fire pit) and smoking his pipe under the open sky, there are thousands of first-person accounts of miracles and life-altering healings attributed to him. From the moment he arrived in Shirdi, Baba seemed to have a singular purpose: to truly bless whoever sincerely sought his help. “Take one step towards me,” Baba would say, “And I will take 99 towards you.”

His fame has grown far beyond the Indian subcontinent, and today, millions of devotees visit his Samadhi shrine (tomb) in Shirdi every year. For more than a century, now, it’s each visitor’s direct personal experience that, from that holy place, Baba tirelessly answers all heartfelt prayers, attending to each and every person as if they are Baba’s sole and immediate concern. Such is Sai Baba’s relationship with everyone who looks to him: he is completely and fully present.

During Baba’s life and since his death in 1918, his ‘protocol’ seems to have remained the same: he knows exactly what you need, when you need it, and he knows exactly how to give it to you. Of all the great saints and holy masters of India, Baba is recognized within the community of saints as the ultimate master of ‘burning’ (healing) people’s blocks and karmas. His soul, his power and his blessings are not bound by time, distance or circumstances. His spiritual capacity, empowered with this omnipresent ability to heal, demands one thing of us…that we trust in him fully, so we know without doubt that it’s true.

An Embodiment of Love

Shirdi Sai Baba, the pillar of Satya, Divine Truth, is most commonly described by his devotees as the embodiment of Love, an endlessly caring, divinely inspiring and compassionate grandfather, who only wants your happiness, your growth and your fulfilment. Once you get a taste of his love, you’ll be hooked forever.

Yet, it’s said Baba, like a wise elder, also watches each of us patiently, and when we get stuck in our own personal illusions or step off the path of Wisdom and vear away from our spiritual growth, he doesn’t let us go there indefinitely. Baba can be instrumental in helping you get through your blocks, to rise above them, if you sincerely want that. All of this, Baba accomplishes with divine love and immaculate precision. Depending on the sacred need, he can make a withered garden bloom perpetually and turn liquid Mercury into a solid emerald with healing powers. These are examples of some of the beautifully kind and flowery words spoken about Baba; yet, in a very practical sense, every praise uttered, still doesn’t do him justice enough, in comparison to who he truly is and what he does. He’s someone we can look to, speak to in our hearts and see our longings and prayers be answered. He has come, in modern times, to show us that the Divine is real — it’s who he is and who we are, too.

We want to offer you the opportunity to come to know and build your own relationship with this beautiful divine soul.

Shirdi Sai Baba Collection

In honor of this year’s 100th Anniversary celebration of Baba’s Mahasamadhi, we’ve designed and authentically activated a blessed selection of Shirdi Baba meditation malas. You can use these sacred malas to connect with Shirdi Sai Baba in one of the following ways:

1. Meditate with his Mantra

Om Sai Sri Sai Jai Jai Sai

  • OM – like the ‘om’ in ‘home’
  • SAI – like the ‘si’ in ‘sign’
  • SREE – pronounced similar to ‘tree’
  • SAI – like the ‘si’ in ‘sign’
  • JAI – like ‘jay’
  • JAI – again, like ‘jay’
  • SAI – like the ‘si’ in ‘sign’

Shirdi Baba gave this mantra during his lifetime to his devotees as means to call on him instantly.

How to use this mantra for japa meditation:

It’s recommended to initially meditate with this mantra for a minimum of 41 days, in order to begin charging the sacred power of the mantra to your soul. In order to complete the daily minimum required number of repetitions of the mantra — 108 consecutive repetitions, without interruption — using a meditation mala is recommended to ensure the minimum requirement of repetitions of the mantra will be reached without the distraction of having to count them. In addition, during the meditation, the mala is also charged with the power of the mantra, along with your soul, directly connecting it to your soul. In this way, it quickly becomes a very personal sacred power object.

Also, at the start of each meditation session, it’s recommended that you set and (silently) state your personal spiritual intention with regards to this meditation, such as, “Baba, please take me into your heart and let me consciously know you are with me.” Furthermore, whenever possible, without strain or effort, during meditation gently visualize Baba’s face in your third eye.

2. Connecting through Shirdi Sai’s picture

Shirdi Sai Baba face

Every depiction of a divine soul offers direct access to that divine soul. Therefore, it’s highly recommended that you download and print Baba’s picture and put it in front of you. Set it in a place where it will be somewhere in your line-of-sight, at some point, every day. When you have the time, sit comfortably in front of it, close your eyes, and when you’re ready, slowly open your eyes and look into Baba’s eyes, do your best to open your heart and think your intention.

There is no such thing as a ‘wrong’ intention. That said, even a ‘bad’ intention, Baba will address; though, in nearly every case, Baba’s response will be to reveal the error of your ways and realign your intentions.

More importantly, perhaps there are problems or pain & suffering you want him to help you resolve.

Give him your problems, he will take care. Sincerely give them to Baba and he will take care. Baba’s grace has nothing to do with ‘blind’ faith. Accessing it only calls for open-hearted sincerity.

Our Guruji, Sri Kaleshwar, recommended a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba be kept visible from the main entrance of your home so that  every time before leaving your home, we take a moment to connect with him, and every time we come home, we look to him again, if just a for conscious moment. This practice will aid in growing your connection and clarity about your relationship with this Divine Master.

3. Read Shirdi Sai Baba stories

As a sadhana (spiritual practice), Baba recommended to his devotees to read the histories of his life and works. The most comprehensive compilation is the “Shri Sai Satcharita”, Baba’s authorized biography.

So many people, including us, have had miracle experiences reading these sacred accounts. Though, maybe we ought to warn you that it’s not because it’s written like a bestselling page-turner from the West, or anything of that tone or sort. But hang in there. We can promise you something unexpected, awe-inspiring and deeply heart-opening will happen to and for you, if you vow to read it from cover to cover.
